About 50 miles above Casper the North Platte is joined by the Sweetwater River to form the Pathfinder Reservoir. The Pathfinder Dam and Reservoir was a major feat of engineering when it was built in the first decade of the 1900's. It is now part of the National Register of Historic Places. In modern times, it hosts a wide variety of fish species for the sportsman: brown trout, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, ohrid trout, and walleye. Rainbow and cutthroat trout are stocked annually in the reservoir. Northeast of the Pathfinder Reservoir it passes through the Alcova and Gray Reef reservoirs before it hits Casper. Available fish species include Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout, and Brown Trout.

The North Platte River has a 104-mile stretch through Upper Platte Valley named as a blue-ribbon trout stream by Wyoming Game and Fish it includes Miracle Mile, along with Grey Reef and the area between Pathfinder Reservoir and Alcova Reservoir. These stretches of river are famous for huge trout and great fly fishing.
